LOCATION - Lat 48°46'52", long 117°24'55" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in SE 1/4 NE 1/4 sec.19, T.38 N., R.43 E., Pend Oreille County, WA, Hydrologic Unit 17010216, on left bank 1,000 ft downstream from Box Canyon Dam, 2.8 mi north of Ione, and at mile 34.3. AUXILLIARY GAGE: Lat 48°47'35", long 117°25'13", in NW 1/4 SE 1/4 sec. 18, T. 38 N., R. 43 E., Pend Oreille County, Hydrologic Unit 17010216, on left bank 1.2 mi downstream from base gage near cable.
DRAINAGE AREA - 24,900 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1933: Drainage area. WSP 2133:1969. WDR WA-81-2: 1976.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1952 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 1900 ft above NGVD of 1929. Prior to Mar. 29, 1954, nonrecording gage at site 300 ft upstream at same datum. Mar. 29 to Aug. 25, 1954, nonrecording gage at present site and datum. Since Aug. 20, 1967, auxiliary water-stage recorder 1.2 mi downstream at same datum.
REMARKS - Flow regulated by Box Canyon Reservoir, 1,000 ft upstream, since June 1955 and by Pend Oreille Lake, Flathead Lake, Hungry Horse Reservoir, and by several smaller reservoirs and powerplants. Numerous diversions upstream from station for irrigation. U.S. Geological Survey satellite telemeter at station.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of June 1948 reached an elevation of 2,018.00 ft, from floodmarks, discharge, 167,000 ft³/s.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum daily discharge, 136,000 ft³/s June 13, 14, 1972; maximum daily elevation, 2,015.44 ft June 5, 7, 1997 (mean of surge), (backwater from Boundary Dam); minimum daily discharge, 82 ft³/s Oct. 5, 1985 (result of regulation).
