LOCATION - Lat 22°10'46.5", long 159°27'59.0" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Kauai County, HI, Hydrologic Unit 20070000, on left bank 2.3 mi directly southeast of Hanalei Bridge, 3.3 stream miles upstream of the Hanalei Bridge, and 5.5 stream miles upstream from the river mouth.
DRAINAGE AREA - 18.51 mi². from automated delineation using 10-meter National Elevation Dataset digital elevation model data dated September 2006 and Watershed Boundary Dataset dated May 2008, using UTM Zone 4 projection, NAD 83 horizontal datum.
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1937: Drainage Area. WSP 2137: 1962(M), 1963-65(P). WDR HI-77-1: 1970-76(M), 1975-76. WDR HI-00-1: Drainage Area. WDR-HI-10-1: Drainage Area, 2010(M). WDR-HI-11-1: 1996(M).  Instantaneous discharge data was revised from April 15-18, 2018 on August 13, 2019.
PERIOD OF RECORD - January 1912 to November 1919, water years 1962-63 (annual maximum), December 1962 to current year.
GAGE - Water stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 60.0 ft above mean sea level (from topographic map). January 1, 1912 to November 20, 1919, nonrecording gage at site 0.3 mi downstream at different datum. January 26 to December 26, 1962, crest-stage gage at site 0.5 mi downstream at different datum. Water-stage recorder and crest-stage at site 0.5 mi downstream at different datum from December 27, 1962 to May 10, 2000.
REMARKS - Two ditches, Hanalei tunnel outlet (USGS station number 16100000) and China Ditch (USGS station number 16102000) no longer divert water from Hanalei River. Hanalei Tunnel Ditch has not been used since September 11, 1992 as a result of extensive damage sustained from Hurricane Iniki.  China Ditch was discontinued (date unknown). The China Ditch diversion is located about 200 yards downstream from the present Hanalei River gage location.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 41,600 ft³/s, November 3, 1995, gage height, 15.81 ft, from rating curve extended above 26,600 ft³/s; minimum, 31 ft³/s, September 30, October 1, 2, 5, 12, 13, November 3, 1975.
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 2003 to September 2006 and October 2007 to September 2009.
PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - SUSPENDED-SEDIMENT DISCHARGE: October 2003 to September 2006 and October 2007 to September 2009.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Sediment concentration: maximum daily mean 550 mg/L on February 2, 2005; minimum daily mean 0 mg/L on February 11, 2004, July 16, 2004, and August 26-28, 2009. Sediment discharge: maximum daily 14,000 tons on February 21, 2006, minimum daily 0.04 tons on August 27, 2009.
