Click to hide Water-Year Summary instructions and information
  • Water-Year Summary reports summarize a year of hydrologic data in a printer-friendly format.
  • For water years 2014 onward, choose a water year and parameter and an on-demand Water-Year Summary report will be generated.
  • For water years 2006 through 2013, choose a water year and an Annual Water Data Report will be provided.
  • For water years 2005 and earlier, Annual Water Data Reports may be available in digital format.
  • Not all sites have reports available for every water year.

USGS Water-Year Summary 2023
295124089542100 Caernarvon Outfall Channel at Caernarvon, LA
LOCATION - Lat 29°51'12.8", long 89°54'27.7" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Plaquemines Parish, LA, Hydrologic Unit 08090203, on a four-legged platform, 1000 yards downstream of the outfall of the Caernarvon control structure.
DRAINAGE AREA - Indeterminate.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - January 2001 to September 2015, October 2015 to current year (unit values only).
GAGE -

Water-stage recorder and acoustic velocity meter.

Datum of gage is 0.46 feet below NAVD 88 GEOID12b EPOCH 2010.0000.

REMARKS -

Negative discharge indicates flow into marsh storage, not into the Mississippi River.

Satellite telemetry at station.

Positive and negative flows at this site are defined by direction and are specified to be parallel to the channel at the gage location. The Positive flow direction is south-southeast.

Streamflow at this site is affected significantly by astronomical tides. Astronomical tides cause significant cycles of approximately 24.84 hours at this site. Because a different portion of the 24.84 hour tidal cycle is averaged in successive daily (24-hour) computations, a systematic secondary oscillation, unrelated to basin hydrology and having a period of about two weeks may be apparent in daily data published from January 2001 to September 2015.

Extremes for period of record may have been exceeded during period of missing record during Hurricane Katrina, 2005; Hurricane Gustav, 2009; Hurricane Isaac, 2012; Hurricane Ida, 2021 and/or rating model exceedance.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum recorded positive discharge, 9870 ft³/s, May 9, 2008; maximum recorded gage height, 8.87 ft., Aug. 28, 2021, Hurricane Ida; maximum recorded negative discharge, -2200 ft³/s, Oct. 5, 2007; minimum recorded gage height, -1.18 ft, Aug. 25, 2008.
WATER-QUALITY RECORDS
PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE: October 2002 to current year. SALINITY: October 2002 to current year. WATER TEMPERATURE: October 2002 to current year.
INSTRUMENTATION - Water-quality monitor recording specific conductance and water temperature.
REMARKS - Extremes for period of record may have been exceeded during period of missing record during Hurricane Katrina, 2005; Hurricane Gustav, 2009; Hurricane Isaac, 2012; Hurricane Ida, 2021.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE: Maximum recorded, 5,320 microsiemens/cm, Sep 27, 2004; minimum recorded, 177 microsiemens/cm, May 11, 2004. SALINITY: Maximum recorded, 2.9 ppt, Sep 27, 2004; minimum, 0.1 ppt, on many days. WATER TEMPERATURE: Maximum recorded, 34.6°C, Jun. 30, 2012; minimum recorded, 2.7°C, Jan. 14, 15, 19, 2010.
