WELL CHARACTERISTICS - Depth 107 ft. Upper casing diameter 2 in; top of first opening 87 ft, bottom of last opening 107 ft. The hole for well LS-502 was drilled with a hydraulic rotary drill-rig on Dec. 06, 2006 to a depth of 120 feet. The well is constructed of a 20-feet-long, 2.04-inch-diameter, schedule-80 PVC, 0.010-inch slotted, flush-threaded screen, glued to about 90 feet of 2.04-inch-diameter, schedule-80 PVC casing. The casing stickup was 2.33 feet above land surface on Dec. 06, 2006. The open interval of the well is 87 - 107 feet below land surface and the total well depth is 107 feet.
DATUM - Land-surface datum is 972.47 ft above North American Vertical Datum of 1988. Measuring point: MP is top of casing, not protection post, 2.33 ft above land-surface datum, Dec. 6, 2006 to present. The measuring point is a black mark on the top of the 2-inch diameter PVC well casing, which was 2.33 feet above land surface on Nov. 2, 2009. Elevation of the measuring point is 974.80 plus-or-minus 0.030 feet above sea level, North American Vertical Datum of 1988, based on differential GPS Survey on Oct. 7, 2010.
PERIOD OF RECORD -
Hourly water levels are recorded from 01 November 2007 at 19:00 CDT to the present with a pressure transducer and data logger, except during the following periods:
Nov. 02, 2007 at 11:00 CDT - Nov. 14, 2007 at 07:00 CST: due to station failure.
Apr. 08, 2008 at 10:00 CDT - Apr. 14, 2008 at 19:00 CDT: due to severed transducer cable.
Apr. 15, 2008 at 11:00 CDT - Jul. 11, 2008 at 04:00 CDT: due to data logger memory being full.
Oct. 03, 2008 at 00:00-08:00 CDT: due to data over-writing during bad telemetry
Jan. 02, 2010 at 03:00-09:00 CDT: due to data over-writing during bad telemetry
Jan. 03, 2010 at 03:00-09:00 CDT: due to data over-writing during bad telemetry
Jan. 04, 2010 at 03:00-09:00 CDT: due to data over-writing during bad telemetry
Jan. 09, 2010 at 05:00-08:00 CDT: due to data over-writing during bad telemetry
Sept. 22, 2013 - Nov. 07, 2013: due to a failing transducer.
Dec. 22, 2013 - Jan. 28, 2014: due to a failing replacement transducer.
Mar. 19, 2014 - May 19, 2014: due to a solar panel to data logger power issue.
When possible, the missing daily-average water levels (above) were estimated based on the trend of the hydrograph during these periods until 1 July 2016.
GAGE - Water level and water temperature are measured with a Design Analysis H-310 submersible pressure transducer nominally accurate to 0.01 feet and 0.1°C, respectively. A Texas Electronics TRP-525I tipping-bucket rain gage currently measures precipitation and records precipitation quarter-hourly. Rain gage is nominally accurate to 0.01 inches. Water level, water temperature, precipitation, shelter temperature, shelter relative humidity, and battery voltage are all recorded by a Campbell Scientific, Inc. CR206 (512K memory) data logger, which records all data hourly, except precipitation data, which is recorded quarter-hourly. The data logger is housed in a 12-inch X 14-inch grey fiberglass shelter attached to 12.4' tall, 1.5-inch diameter mast. The gage is powered by one 20W solar panel and is telemetered by a Sierra Wireless LX60 cellular modem.
COOPERATION - Well LS-502 is operated by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Lower Sioux Indian Community.
CLIMATOLOGICAL RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD -
Precipitation were recorded hourly during Nov. 01, 2007 at 19:00 CDT to Jul. 02, 2014 at 07:00 CDT. Precipitation is recorded quarter-hourly from Jul. 02, 2014 at 07:15 CDT to the present, except during the following periods.
May 25, 2008 at 18:00 CDT - May 26, 2009 at 13:00 CDT: due to station failure.
Oct. 04, 2011 - Nov. 09, 2011: multiplier reset to 0.00 inches/tip and did not record events.
Sept. 22, 2013 at 09:00 CDT - Nov. 07, 2013 at 09:00 CST: due to station failure.
May 28, 2016 at 07:00 CDT - Jun. 23, 2016 at 10:30 CDT: due to a plugged rain gage funnel.
Intermittent gaps: 11-27 Oct. 2016: due to poor telemetry and delay with datalogger download.
When possible, missing precipitation daily-sums (above) were accurately estimated based on a National Weather Service precipitation record at Redwood Falls, Minnesota, which is 5.2 miles to the northwest until 1 July 2016.
INSTRUMENTATION - Precipitation is measured with a Texas Electronics TRP-525I tipping-bucket rain gage, which is accurate to 0.01 inches. The rain gage is unheated and uncovered during the winter. Thus precipitation data during freezing periods (about December through early April) result from melting of snow during warm periods and do NOT represent actual precipitation.
