GROUNDWATER RECORDS
WELL CHARACTERISTICS - Depth 118 ft. Upper casing diameter 2.04 in; top of first opening 108 ft, bottom of last opening 118 ft. The hole for well US-O3 was drilled with a 6.88-inch-diameter hydraulic rotary drill-rig on Sept. 28, 2006 to a depth of 126 feet. The well is constructed of a 10-feet-long, 2.04-inch-diameter, schedule-80 PVC, 0.010-inch slotted, flush-threaded screen, glued to about 110 feet of 2.04-inch-diameter, schedule-80 PVC casing. The casing stickup was 2.07 feet above land surface on Apr. 24, 2007. The open interval of the well is 108 - 118 feet below land surface and the total well depth is 118 feet.
DATUM - Land-surface datum is 1,048.36 ft above North American Vertical Datum of 1988. Measuring point: MP is top of casing, not protection post, 2.07 ft above land-surface datum, Sep. 28, 2006 to present. The measuring point is a black mark on the top of the 2-inch diameter PVC well casing, which was 2.07 feet above land surface on 23 April 2007. Elevation of the measuring point is 1050.425 plus-or-minus 0.031 feet above sea level, North American Vertical Datum of 1988, based on differential GPS Survey on Oct. 6, 2010.
PERIOD OF RECORD -

Water levels were recorded hourly during Apr. 25, 2007 at 11:00 CDT to Nov. 03, 2020 at 08:00 CST, except during the following periods:

28 Nov. 2016 at 06:00-08:00 CST: due to transducer failure.
28 Nov. 2016 at 23:00 - 29 Nov. 2016 at 05:00 CST: due to transducer failure.
17 May 2017 at 16:00 CDT - 18 May 2017 at 15:00 CDT: due to transducer failure.
06 Aug. 2017 at 19:00 CDT - 07 Aug. 2017 at 04:00 CDT: due to transducer failure.
26 Aug. 2017 at 00:00-12:00 CDT: due to transducer failure.
02 Oct. 2017 at 23:00 CDT - 03 Oct. 2017 at 13:00 CDT: due to transducer failure.
05 Nov. 2019 at 08:00 CST - 12 Dec. 2019 at 21:00 CST: due to datalogger overwriting, which was caused by site access agreement issue.

GAGE -

Water level and water temperature were measured with a WaterLOG H-3123, 0-15 psi range, submersible pressure transducer nominally accurate to 0.01 feet and 0.1°C, respectively. A Texas Electronics TRP-525 tipping-bucket rain gage measures precipitation and is nominally accurate to 0.01 inches. Water level, water temperature, precipitation, shelter temperature, and battery voltage were all recorded by a Campbell Scientific, Inc. CR206 (512K memory), which records all data hourly. The data logger is housed in a 12-inch X 14-inch grey fiberglass shelter attached an antenna mast. The gage is powered by a 10W solar panel and is telemetered by radio to a cellular modem at the top of the water tower (base station). Cellular telemetry was discontinued at the water tower base station on 12 Nov. 2019.

A Texas Electronics TRP-525I tipping-bucket rain gage was added to the station on Apr. 23, 2007 at 20:00 CDT, which measures and records precipitation total hourly. Rain gage recording frequency increased to quarter-hourly on Oct. 10, 2012 at 12:15 CDT. Rain gage is nominally accurate to 0.01 inches.

The pressure transducer, rain gage, and data logger were removed from the well on 03 Nov. 2020 at 08:00 CST. Data collection for the Upper Sioux Community study have concluded and all data logging equipment have been removed from the site.

COOPERATION - Well US-O3 was operated (2007-2020) by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Upper Sioux Community.
CLIMATOLOGICAL RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD -

Precipitation were recorded hourly during Apr. 23, 2007 at 20:00 CDT to Apr. 07, 2014 at 23:00 CDT. Precipitation is recorded quarter-hourly from Apr. 08, 2014 at 00:15 CDT to Nov. 03, 2020 at 08:00 CDT, except during the following periods.

12 Jun. 2010 - 08 Aug. 2010: under-estimated/inaccurate data due to partially plugged funnel.
08 Aug. 2010 - 06 Oct. 2010: no data recorded due to fully plugged rain gage funnel.
18 Jul. 2015 - 02 Aug. 2015: deleted inaccurate rainfall data due to partially plugged rain gage funnel.
09 Jul. 2017 at 21:45 CDT - 26 Jul. 2017 at 13:15 CDT: Raingage had a partially plugged rain gage funnel. Based on the rainfall record at site US-CM3, all the rainfall during this period appears to have passed through the gage. Only rainfall totals on periods longer than about 2 days are accurate.
29 May 2018 at 12:15 CDT - 16 Aug. 2018 at 11:00 CDT: deleted inaccurate rainfall data due to partially plugged rain gage funnel.
05 Nov. 2019 at 07:45 CST - 12 Dec. 2019 at 15:45:00 CST: due to datalogger overwriting, which was caused by site access agreement issue.

When possible, missing precipitation daily-sums (above) were accurately estimated through 01 July 2016, based on a precipitation record at the nearby US-CM3 site, which is 2.5 miles to the west.

INSTRUMENTATION - Precipitation is measured with a Texas Electronics TRP-525I tipping-bucket rain gage, which is accurate to 0.01 inches. The rain gage is unheated and uncovered during the winter. Thus precipitation data during freezing periods (about December through early April) result from melting of snow during warm periods and do NOT represent actual precipitation.
