USGS Water-Year Summary 2019
LOCATION - Lat 43°25'15.68", long 104°07'53.13" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in NE 1/4 NW 1/4 NE 1/4 sec.25, T.40 N., R.61 W., Niobrara County, WY, Hydrologic Unit 10120106, on right bank at downstream side of old highway bridge, 0.1 mi downstream from Sage Creek, 1.8 mi downstream from Robbers Roost Creek, and 17.0 mi northwest of Edgemont, SD.
DRAINAGE AREA - 5,323 mi² of which 1 mi² probably is noncontributing.
REVISIONS HISTORY - WDR SD-10-1: Drainage area.
PERIOD OF RECORD - Oct. 1948 to Sept. 1974, Oct. 2003 to Oct. 2017 (discontinued). Published as South Fork Cheyenne River near Spencer Oct. 1949 to Sept. 1951.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Elevation of gage is 3,600 ft above NGVD of 1929, from topographic map. Prior to Oct. 18, 1955, water-stage recorder at site 400 ft upstream. Oct. 18, 1955, to Aug. 1, 1961, at site 2,500 ft upstream, Aug. 1, 1961, to Aug. 22, 1962, at site 2,200 ft upstream.
REMARKS - For Oct. 1, 2013 to Sept. 30, 2017, records good except those for estimated daily discharges, which are poor. Many small reservoirs above station used for stock and irrigation water, total capacity, about 45,000 acre-ft. Satellite data-collection platform at station. Water temperature and specific conductance measured with each discharge measurement. Station operated by the Wyoming Water Science Center from Oct. 1948 to Sept. 1974.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 16,000 ft³/s, May 27, 1962, gage height, 13.74 ft, site then in use; minimum daily discharge, 0.00 ft³/s, Oct. 4, 1948, no flow at times in most years.
PERIOD OF RECORD - Chemical analysis: Water years 1951-54, 1969-70, and 1972-79, 2005-present. Sediment records: Periodic samples taken May 1971 to July 1974, Mar. 2004 to Aug. 2012.
