GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemetry and crest-stage gage. Elevation of gage is 6,416 ft above NGVD of 1929, from topographic map. Mar. 14, 1953 to May 23, 1958, at site 0.95 mi downstream at datum 54.28 ft lower. May 23, 1958 to Oct. 13, 1961, at site 0.95 mi downstream at datum 54.28 ft lower. Oct. 13, 1961 to Mar. 8, 1962, at site 0.95 mi downstream at datum 53.98 ft lower. Mar. 8, 1962 to June 18, 1965, at site 0.95 mi downstream at datum 53.98 ft lower. June 18, 1965 to Oct. 17, 1984, at site 0.95 mi downstream at datum 54.98 ft lower. Oct. 17, 1984 to Mar. 28, 1985, at site 0.65 mi downstream in bypass channel at datum 54.98 ft lower. Mar. 28, 1985 to Apr. 16, 2008, at current site, at datum 4.00 ft higher.
REMARKS - Water years 2014-2021; records good except for estimated discharges, which are poor. Water year 2022; records fair except for estimated discharges, which are poor. Village of Ruidoso diverts from right bank 7.0 mi upstream for municipal use and returns a portion of this water as effluent from sewage disposal plant downstream from the gage.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - The flood of July 27, 2008 gage-height of 12.08 ft is the highest since 1941. The flood of Sept. 29, 1941 is probably the highest since at least 1904 (discharge not determined).
