LOCATION - Lat 37°45'30", long 89°19'40" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, in NE 1/4 NE 1/4 sec.9, T.9 S., R.2 W., Jackson County, IL, Hydrologic Unit 07140106, on right bank on upstream side of State Highway 127 in Murphysboro, and at mile 37.5.
DRAINAGE AREA - 2,159 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - Revisions: Gage datum was updated to 335.06 ft NAVD88 on March 29, 2022, as determined by a GNSS Level II survey. Gage datum was previously published as 335.50 ft NGVD29 from levels.

GAGE - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers water-stage recorder, satellite telemeter, water-quality monitor, crest-stage gage, and acoustic velocity meter. Datum of gage is 335.06 ft above NAVD of 1988. Oct. 6, 1931 to Nov. 13, 1973, non-recording gage read twice daily. Prior to Oct. 1, 2007, auxiliary gage about 1.5 miles downstream at Big Muddy River at Murphysboro, IL (05599500). Converted to base gage Oct. 1, 2007.
REMARKS - Flow regulated at Rend Lake (station 05595950) 67.8 mi upstream from gage since October 1970. Accuracy of records is discussed in the annual Station Analysis archived at the USGS IL Water Science Center.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - SURFACE-WATER DISCHARGE AND STAGE: Flood of Feb. 2, 1916, reached a stage of 34.9 ft, (at station 05599500), present datum, discharge, 28,000 ft³/s.
