LOCATION.--Lat 42° 21', long 112° 15' (NAD27), in SE1/4 sec.28, T.12 S., R.36 E., Oneida County, Hydrologic Unit 17040208, Malad Summit quad., on left bank just downstream from point where flow that is diverted through Malad powerplant re-enters the stream, 8.6 mi southwest of Downey, and 10 mi upstream from mouth.
DRAINAGE AREA.--9.16 mi2, revised.
PERIOD OF RECORD.--October 1937 to September 1949 (discontinued). October 1911 to August 1914, at site 1.25 mi upstream.
GAGE.--Staff gage with wooden control. Elevation of gage is 5,850 ft above NGVD of 1929, by barometer. Prior to July 26, 1939, staff gages at same site at different datum.
REMARKS.--Water is diverted from Birch Creek 0.5 mi downstream from station and carried by transmountain canal to Devil Creek in Bear River basin. The Malad powerplant with a small reservoir above the station may cause slight diurnal fluctuations.
COOPERATION.--October 1911 to August 1914, gage heights and some discharge measurements furnished by the U.S. Forest Service.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD.--Maximum discharge observed, 95 ft3/s July 15, 1938,
by velocity-area method, on basis of floodmarks at measuring section;
minimum observed, 3.4 ft3/s Dec. 24-27, 1913.
