02112000 YADKIN RIVER AT WILKESBORO, NC
LOCATION - Lat 36°09'09", long 81°08'44" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Wilkes County, NC, Hydrologic Unit 03040101, On right bank 30 ft downstream from bridge on State Highway 18, and 268 between North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro, 150 ft downstream from Reddies River, 0.5 mi northeast of Wilkesboro, and 382 miles upstream from mouth of Pee Dee River in Winyah Bay.
DRAINAGE AREA - 504 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1433: 1903-09, 1922, 1930, 1932, 1934, daily discharges; 1925-26, 1930, 1946-48, maximum discharge. WDR NC-80-1: Drainage area.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - April 1903 to June 1909, October 1920 to current year. Prior to October 1928, published as "Yadkin River at North Wilkesboro".
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 941.75 ft above NGVD of 1988. April 10, 1903, to June 30, 1909, and October 17, 1920, to April 10, 1929, nonrecording gage at site 1.2 mi downstream at different datum. April 11, 1929, to January 9, 1930, nonrecording gage at present site and datum. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers telephone and satellite telemetry at streamgage.
REMARKS -

Flow regulated since 1962 by W. Kerr Scott Reservoir (station 02111391) 5.5 mi upstream.  

Gage-height records are generally good. Discharge records are generally fair except for estimated discharges, which are poor. Additional details on the accuracy of the records can be obtained by contacting the USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center at gs-w-nc_nwisweb_data_inquiries@usgs.gov.

 

EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood in July 1916 reached a stage of 34.5 ft present site and datum, from floodmark; discharge, 116,000 ft³/s, from rating curve extended as explained above.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - Prior to regulation maximum discharge: 160,000 ft³/s, August 14, 1940, from rating curve extended above 20,000 ft³/s on basis of slope-area measurement of peak flow; gage height: 37.6 ft, from floodmarks.
