USGS Water-Year Summary 2021
LOCATION - Lat 38°55'25", long 79°52'45" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Randolph County, WV, Hydrologic Unit 05020001, on left bank 1.4 mi upstream from the mouth of Leading Creek and 1.5 mi west of Elkins, and at mile 79.5.
DRAINAGE AREA - 271 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WDR WV-97-1: Drainage area.
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1944 to September 2004 (daily discharge and peaks), October 2004 to September 2008 (annual maximum gage height), October 2008 to September 2012 (annual maximum and minimum gage height), October 2012 to current year (daily mean gage height). Prior to October 1960, published as Tygart River near Elkins.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemeter. Datum of gage is 1,894.35 ft above NAVD 88. Prior to Nov. 16, 1944, nonrecording gage, and Nov. 16, 1944 to Sept. 30, 1951, water-stage recorder at site 200 ft upstream at same datum.
REMARKS - Slight regulation at times by flood-diversion dam upstream from station.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 23,500 ft³/s, Nov. 5, 1985, gage height, 22.81 ft, from floodmarks, from rating curve extended above 13,800 ft³/s, on basis of slope-area measurement of peak flow, highest since 1888.
AVERAGE DISCHARGE FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - 60 years, 525 ft³/s, 26.33 in/yr.
PERIOD OF RECORD - July 2014 to current year.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum daily precipitation, 2.13 in., July 7, 2019; minimum precipitation, 0.00 in., on many days.
