03069500 CHEAT RIVER NEAR PARSONS, WV
LOCATION - Lat 39°07'17.6", long 79°40'31.9" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Tucker County, WV, Hydrologic Unit 05020004, on right bank 2.0 mi north of Parsons, 3.0 mi downstream from confluence of Black Fork and Shavers Fork, and at mile 75.5. The instrument shelter is located on the downstream right bridge seat of the Holly Meadows Rd Bridge. The stilling well located 1800 ft downstream on the left bank was discontinued beginning with the 2017 water year.
DRAINAGE AREA - 718 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1305: 1917(M), 1924(M), 1932(M), 1936(M), 1938-39(M). WSP 1335: 1916. WSP 1385: 1918-19(M). SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - January 1913 to current year (daily discharge and peaks). Monthly discharge only for some periods published in WSP 1305.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemeter. Datum of gage is 1,589.8 ft above NAVD 88.  Prior to Aug. 17, 1944, nonrecording gage on Moss Bridge just downstream of current site and at datum 0.14 ft lower. Aug. 1944 to Nov. 5, 1985, at site stilling well 1,800 ft downstream at datum 1.13 ft lower (gage destroyed by flood on Nov. 5, 1985).  Nov. 21, 1985, to Sept. 30, 1986, recording gage on Moss Bridge at datum 0.14 ft lower than current.  Oct. 1, 1986 to Oct. 1, 2017, recording gage 1,800 ft downstream at datum 1.27 ft lower than current datum.   
REMARKS - Maximum peak flow of 170,000 ft³/s from rating curve extended above 55,000 ft³/s, highest since 1844. Maximum peak stage of 24.30 ft from floodmarks.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of 1844 was about 85,000 ft³/s. Flood of July 10, 1888 reached a stage of 20.5 ft, from floodmarks, at site and datum in use prior to Aug. 17, 1944, discharge, 71,000 ft³/s.
