LOCATION - Lat 43°06'35", long 84°41'35" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in NE 1/4 SW 1/4 sec.05, T.8 N., R.3 W., Clinton County, MI, Hydrologic Unit 04050005, on right bank at downstream side of bridge on Maple Road in Maple Rapids, 50 ft upstream from Pine Creek, and 2.3 mi upstream from Hayworth Creek. Records include flow of Pine Creek.
DRAINAGE AREA - 434 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1707: 1956.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - August 1944 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 642.09 ft above NAVD 88, converted on July 9, 2020 from NGVD 29 (levels by Michigan Department of Natural Resources). Prior to Oct. 4, 1968, nonrecording gage at same site and datum.
REMARKS - At times, water is pumped from the river about 8 mi upstream to fill the wetlands in the Maple River State Game Area. Some of the water is returned to the river at a later date, when water levels in the wetlands are lowered.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood in March 1904 reached a stage of 13.8 ft, from information by local resident.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 9,020 ft³/s, Apr. 18, 2013, gage height, 11.02 ft, from rating curve extended above 5,000 ft³/s; maximum gage height, 12.33 ft, Sept. 12, 1986, from floodmark, result of dam failure on Rainbow lake (Pine Creek).
