12056500 NORTH FORK SKOKOMISH RIVER BELOW STAIRCASE RAPIDS, NEAR HOODSPORT, WA
LOCATION - Lat 47°30'52", long 123°19'43" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in NW 1/4 sec.04, T.23 N., R.5 W., Mason County, WA, Hydrologic Unit 17110017, Olympic National Park, on left bank 1.2 mi upstream from Lake Cushman, 2.8 mi upstream from Dry Creek, 11.3 mi northwest of Hoodsport, and at mile 29.2.
DRAINAGE AREA - 57.2 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1286: 1932, 1935, 1937(M), 1942(M), 1947(P), 1948(M). WSP 1636: 1940(M). WSP 1736: 1927. WSP 1932: Drainage area. The maximum discharge for the water year 1986 has been revised to 15,200 ft³/s, Jan. 18, 1986, gage height, 11.10 ft.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - July 1924 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 762.26 ft above NGVD of 1929. Prior to Nov. 1, 1934, water-stage recorder, and Nov. 1, 1934, to Nov. 10, 1941, nonrecording gages, on right bank at same datum.
REMARKS - No regulation or diversion upstream from station. U.S. Geological Survey satellite telemeter at station.

  • Water Year 2015: Records good except for estimated daily discharges, which are fair.
  • Water Year 2016: No estimated daily discharges. Records good.
  • Water Year 2017, 2018: No estimated discharges.  Records fair.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 27,000 ft³/s, Nov. 5, 1934, gage height, 14.4 ft, from high-water mark, from rating curve extended above 9,800 ft³/s, on basis of slope-area measurement at gage height 12.2 ft; minimum discharge recorded, 16 ft³/s, Sept. 23, 1930, gage height, 1.12 ft.

PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE: April 1996 to April 1998. WATER TEMPERATURE: April 1965 to September 1982, June 1989 to December 1989, December 1990 to April 1991, June 1992 to April 1998, October 1999 to September 2006, December 2011 to current year.
INSTRUMENTATION - Temperature recorder April 1965 to September 1982, June 1989 to April 1998, October 1999 to September 2006, December 2011 to current year. Water-quality monitor April 1996 to April 1998. Electronic Data Logger with 15-minute recording interval. Prior to June 13, 1997, a 60-minute recording interval.
REMARKS - Land slide on left bank about 610 ft above footbridge occurred in water year 2008.
  • Water Year 2012: WATER TEMPERATURE records are excellent, except for Oct. 1-Dec. 22 (no data available). Maximum recorded temperature 13.8°C on Aug. 17. Minimum recorded temperature 0.3°C, Mar. 12.   • Water Year 2014: WATER TEMPERATURE records are excellent, except for Feb. 15-17 (missing unit values due to power failure).
  • Water Year 2015: WATER TEMPERATURE records are excellent Oct. 1 to May 16, fair May 17 to June 4, Aug. 30 to Sept. 30. Unit values were removed for the low water period (June 5 to Aug. 29); sensor was isolated from main channel and in very shallow water. Maximum recorded temperature likely occurred during period of removed record.
  • Water Year 2016: WATER TEMPERATURE records are excellent.
  • Water Year 2017: WATER TEMPERATURE records excellent, except for August 1-Sept. 15, which are fair.
  • Water Year 2018: WATER TEMPERATURE records excellent, except for July 28 to Sept. 15, which are fair.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE: Maximum, 108 microsiemens, September 11 and 28, 1996; minimum, 25 microsiemens, March 18 and 19, 1997. WATER TEMPERATURE: Maximum, 17.4°C, Aug. 17, 2016; minimum, 0.0°C, March 24, 1976, January 31, 1996, December 29, 1996, and December 19, 2012.
