Station gage imageSTATION.--01555000 PENNS CREEK AT PENNS CREEK, PA
LOCATION.--Lat 40`52'00", long 77`02'55", Union County, Hydrologic Unit 02050301, on left bank 250 ft downstream from bridge on State Highway 104, 2.9 mi upstream from Sweitzers Run and 0.8 mi northeast of Penns Creek, PA.
DRAINAGE AREA.--301 square miles.
PERIOD OF RECORD.--October 1929 to current year. Prior to October 1965, published as Penn Creek at Penns Creek.
GAGE.--Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 506.64 ft. above North American Vertical Datum of 1988. Oct 1929 to Feb 1, 1930, non-recording gage at same site and datum. Prior to September 5, 2023, the datum of gage was reported as 507.38 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929. Datum of gage was also previously reported as 506.72 ft above datum of 1912. Satellite and landline telemetry at station.
COOPERATION.--Station established and maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey. Funding for the operation of this station is provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Geological Survey.
GAGE HEIGHTS OF IMPORTANCE.-
Supplied by USGS: Maximum recordable gage height (stage sensor operational limit) - 20.0 ft;
Supplied by NWS: Action stage-6 ft; Flood stage-8 ft, the left or north bank overflows downstream of Rte 104 bridge; a campground is affected;a number of secondary roads in the Penns Creek drainage are affected; Moderate flood stage-10 ft, high water overflows both banks; several homes and cottages on the left or north bank are affected; many secondary roads along the creek are closed; Major flood stage-12 ft, significant overflow of both banks occurs; numerous homes are affected by high water.
